Canines are omnivores, and as such in the wild they ate all their prey, including offal and all that this contained. I.e. partially digested food (normally grasses) from the stomach and intestines.
When animals are rendered down, the carcass is separated in 3 parts. Beef (or lamb or chicken etc.) meal (which consists of the muscle meat, bones, and offal), plus blood, and tallow.
We use all three components and recombine them in our feeds. Labelling regulations do not allow us to combine them as 1unit, so they are recorded as 3 separate things, and listed according to weight. Weight does not take into account nutritional value. E.g. Beef meal has a 50% protein component, blood has 95% protein component and the fish meal we use has a 60% protein content.
You are aware of the benefits of omega 3. Not many people realize that omega 3 needs to be balanced with omega 6 to ensure that the maximum benefit is obtained. The fish meal we use is processed from wild fish caught in NZ waters. Wild fish have the correct balance of omega 3 and 6needed which is not the case with some farmed fish.
Research carried out by the human genome laboratoryin the USA revealed that domesticated dog breeds have 5 times the ability to digest carbohydrates from vegetable matter than the wild canine types, so can obtain energy from corn, rice, and all other types of vegetable matter. Thisresearch based on DNA markers was confirmed by blood and tissue tests. Somevegetables such as onions and grapes also contain elements that are toxic tocanines, so are not used in Ultra dog foods.
Our formulations were tested and adjusted by MasseyUniversity to exceed AAFOC requirements for a premium food.
The difference between a premium food, and a complete food is that the premium food sources over 90% of the protein from animal matter, and has a fixed formula.
A complete food has the correct amount of protein, fat etc., so there is no control over where these are sourced, and so are usually price based on what is available at the time.

This is my dog Sam a purebred German Sheppard who came from a family in Levin, when we got Sam he was sharing a house with a very large family and other animals he came with medication for his ears and skin. He is extremely fussy with food and gets very lean during summer, if he doesn't like something he wont eat it, one thing we found he wasn't fussy with was left over food scrapes which we don't allow often. I have struggled to find a food that he would tuck into once it's put into his bowl and to help his overall outlook as he suffers from dry skin conditions and living by the sea does not help, as he's a large water rat following us out on our surf boards. Yesterday I had my first delivery of the ultra dog food I couldn't wait to feed it to him, when I got home I put a handful into his bowl and Sam loved it he couldn't get enough, I'm so pleased to finally have found a product that will suit him and I'm hoping he will gain weight and his skin will improve.
